Their words still ring in my ears today, they said…

“YOU’LL NEED TO RE-HOME ONE OF YOUR DOGS.”

Oh my gosh… I’d been naive. I hadn’t researched properly. I innocently thought two dogs would mean double the joy. Clearly I was wrong.

The dog trainers said,

“It’s the worst-case scenario, because the puppies are from the same litter they’ll do what they like and will fight for the top dog position – it’ll get really nasty.”

My heart sank. Oh my goodness… what had I done. I couldn’t give one up – it’d be like choosing one of your children - I couldn’t do that.

I looked at the 2 bundles of fluff that fitted nicely in each hand and said out loud,

 “You two are NOT going anywhere.” 

There had to be a way and I was on a mission to find out what it was… 

I started by studying dog psychology. I examined and learned the language that dogs use in order to communicate and I recognized how they talk non-verbally all the time. 

I watched how my two dogs interacted together and I started to get a good understanding about how a dog’s mind works and how I could meet their needs and expectations.

Importantly, I learned how I could place myself in the ‘top dog’ position in a kind and confident way.

But that was only one part of it.

The second part I discovered, which is SO crucial, is that you need to demonstrate the qualities that a pack leader has, which is someone who is confident, decisive and who can take control if there is a crisis.

Someone that is kind and gentle, but also definite and able to put down boundaries.

As time passed and with lots of trial and error it became clear that I was on to something - I was getting great results and I now had a burning desire to become a professional dog trainer, but sadly it felt like a pipe dream.

You see, I didn’t know where to start, I didn’t have a big budget, I knew nothing about social media and had no knowledge about marketing.

Then one day I saw an opportunity that would completely changed my life forever...

That national BBC radio interview was over 15 years ago and since then I’ve contributed to more than 50 different local and national newspapers, magazines, TV and radio shows and have received over £2 million ($2.5 million) in free publicity and free advertising.

I’ve also been featured in BBC and Channel 5 TV shows and have had a regular slot on BBC Radio since 2008 where I answer the listeners’ questions.

And if you’re wondering whether I needed to re-home one of my dogs...

The answer in no, they were the best of friends, never a cross word between them and a joy and pleasure to have.

They are happily playing together in doggy heaven now, I will always be so grateful to them for being my best teachers and I will love them ALWAYS.

Today, we are blessed to have another 4 legged friend called Denzil, Denzil is a rescue Staffy X and boy did he test all my dog training skills when he first arrived!

It took time, dedication and consistency but now he’s the most loyal, happy and well balanced dog who brings so much joy to our lives.
